Tavira

Not so long ago, Tavira was barely on the tourist map at all.  Then more and more foreigners began ‘discovering’ it.  Now it has become the number one place for many visitors but it is still quite hard to define what makes the Eastern Algarve’s oldest and largest town so special.

Tavira is a unpretentious working town with quite a lot of venerable architecture, including a robust medieval church containing the tombs of conquering crusaders next to the walls of a Moorish castle overlooking the seven-arched Roman bridge that spans the placid River Gilhao.

It has long been known as a Cidade das Igrejas (town of churches) because it has so many of them, although most are now closed.

It also has plenty of history but it doesn’t hang heavily in the air.  The prevailing mood is relaxed timelessness and this is especially noticeable along the picturesque waterfront in the very heart of the town.

The river dividing the town, with the boats bobbing on it, adds to the beauty and the romanticism of the place.  The charm is enhanced by the numerous outdoor cafes and the tall majestic palm trees.

It is a big enough town to have everything you want, yet small enough to walk from one side to the other in less than 20 minutes.

Tavira is appropriately known as the Jewel of the Eastern Algarve.  It has a lot to offer, but above all it has character with a strong feeling of harmony and peacefulness.  Apart from the charm of the town itself, enjoy the peaceful white beaches within a short drive, or the 12km stretch of sand on the island of Tavira, a five minute ferry ride from the mainland.

Other nearby attractions include excellent golf courses like Monte Rei and the seafood restaurants in the fishing village of Santa Lucia.

Over development and in appropriate building projects have been kept at bay in Tavira by fastidious local planning regulations enforced by the municipal council
The appeal of this part of the Algarve does not end on the outskirts of town, within a 10 minutes drive you are into a different world and after 20 minutes you are in a different world again.  It has so much to offer our clients.
