National Kitesurfing brings summer to Santa Pola
Tuesday, September 02, 2008Sponsored by both the Ayuntamiento and footwear company Nicoboco the Spanish Kitesurfing Championship was held last weekend in Santa Pola. One of the most colourful events of the year the long weekend brought together over 500 surfers to share three days of good fun and top class sport.
As well as the National Championship there were also two further major events, the International Open Championship and a speed race which required competitors to kitesurf from Santa Pola to Tabarca. And for those surfers who were not quite up to National standard there were numerous opportunities to impress the judges and spectators with daily competitions of their own; Skate half-Pipe, Windsurfing, Volley and Wakeboard. And after a day in competition every evening provided Chill Out sessions at the Café del Mar; in all a major success for competitors and spectators alike.
Following Thursday’s registration the competition proper began on Friday. Those surfers taking part in the National Championship were required to complete two courses; the first marked with buoys required specific drills whilst the second was an eight minute free style performance where each competitor was allowed to show off manoeuvres of their own.
The competition was shown live on Spanish Television.
